The addition of a harp to Jazz had never occurred to me, and in this instance gives a very experimental feel to Brandee's music. Jazz, much like my favourite genre of music, Metal, has absolutely no boundaries, and Soul Awakening is proof of just that. An utter joy to listen too!
Favorite track: Soulris ft. Ravi Coltrane.
Very spiritual and emotionally moving album along the same lines as John and Alice Coltrane. There's even an Alice Coltrane song included with this project. To top it off you have Ravi performing on 2 of the tracks. Excellent lineup of musicians and compelling compositions makes for a very enjoyable listening experience!
This album opened up my world. I had not known music like this was possible, and then to learn it comes from a rich tradition that I could immerse myself in! Also, the production on this album is spotless. Each instrument is perfectly mixed, which is key for music so texture rich.
Surfacing six years after its completion in 2013, this eight track collection was recorded in 2012 under the direction of producer and bassist Dezron Douglas, and embodies the ambition, vigor and aesthetic ideals of The Brandee Younger Quartet, at and since its inception. A benchmark recording that captures the group’s collective brilliance in its infancy, Soul Awakening is a synthesis of the people, places and moments that impacted Younger most, ahead of the album’s creation. The very first album recorded by the ensemble, Soul Awakening marks the birth of Brandee Younger’s artistic signature and the reemergence of the harp as a pillar of modern popular music.

This harpist is known for sharing the stage with Jazz Royalty Jack Dejohnette & Ravi Coltrane, laying down tracks with
Grammy-Winning Rapper Common & Artist&Producer Ryan Leslie, as well as bringing to life the Classic Impressionistic work of Maurice Ravel. Her ability to feature the Harp in genres of music where the instrument is often absent demonstrates her cross-reaching ability as a musician....more

I really can not express why I love this as much as I do. It is out-of-reach for a guy like me and hard to explain the feelings that I feel when I listen to it. The first McCraven album I bought a couple weeks ago ((4 to the right;-), I played it twice, just 2 tracks at a time... It's making me humble because it feels bigger than me, and careful because I don't know where it is taking me. And all of that, is the definition of art. At least, for me it is.... PlayItLoud!
